Celebratory Black Tie Dinner |
Cannon Street Club, London |
At either ends of the ironman based challenge, we will have games of hockey and dinners (in both Durham and London). David played much hockey and attended many dinners in his time, so these events fit very well with the theme of the week.
With a DOH Sale XI that has pace, skill and tenacity throughout, it also seemed silly to miss the opportunity of running out, and sweating profusely, in David’s memory. The DOH Sale XI will have a range of hockey players – from Durham hockey stalwarts (generally pedestrian defenders, with a couple of first XI exceptions) to pilots of various aircrafts, who you would have thought should be able to navigate towards the goal with ease (without floodlights). Lastly, in Phil, we also have a goalkeeper who has shadowed David’s progress over the years, and recently outplayed the Brazilian national keeper. Phil has even promised to complete the challenge in his goalkeeping kit – swimming in the helmet and cycling in the pads could yet prove problematic.
The DOH Sale XI will play at The University of Durham against a side made up of players from David’s former clubs and teams in the North East. The game will be umpired by David’s father, John, who is a keen supporter of hockey in Durham and the North East. The game will be followed by a dinner at The College of St. Hild & St. Bede, where we will be kindly hosted by Dave Miller, President of the Hockey Club.
At the end of the week (that’s a swim, 350 miles of cycling and a half marathon later), the same XI, presumably by this stage chafed, stiff and hungover, will play an RAF XI in London. The game will be followed by a black tie dinner at the impressive Cannon Street Club
We look forward to all of the events being well supported.
